Pier Story: Prairie-made Bridge Company
It began in fall 2014 – Evan, his buddy Joe, a pickup truck and a few hand tools.
Evan described his vision of becoming a bridge “doctor,” where he’d offer his clients practical and innovative treatments for their bridge woes. “Do you know how many bridges get ripped out on the prairies,” Evan would say with frustration, “when you could just replace a rotten pile?! It’s absurd.” Or “You wouldn’t believe how rare it is for RMs to get practical bridge guidance they can act on – they are often just given technical reports full of jargon.”
Evan grew up on a chicken-beef-dairy-vegetable hobby farm and entrepreneurial-inventor testing ground just outside of Saskatoon. In 2003, Evan got his feet wet in the bridge world. He worked for Saskatchewan Highways’ Municipal Bridge Branch, as a part of his civil engineering degree. After a stint with an engineering consulting company based in Winnipeg and a brief chicken farming venture, Evan started his first bridge consulting business in 2009. He provided cost-effective construction inspection and contract administration services to municipalities.
After working with construction companies on bridge construction and maintenance projects in all three prairie provinces, Evan’s entrepreneurial ventures stepped it up to a new level in the fall of 2014. He observed a need for enhanced services to municipalities, where clients’ needs were prioritized and tax-payers’ dollars were optimized. Evan realized he could uniquely accomplish this by providing services spanning both engineering and construction disciplines.
And so Pier Solutions was born. Evan’s multi-faceted self – hard-working farming, optimistic entrepreneurial, technically grounded, practically minded, and relationally motivated – coalesced into a unique company.
Today, Pier Solutions is based in the RM of Springfield, Manitoba, with satellite operations in the RM of Cornwallis, Manitoba, and the RM of Tisdale, Saskatchewan. With client services at the core of our culture, and an entrepreneurial vision of offering specialized bridge services to clients across our provinces, we look forward to where the next years will take us!
